Class Description:

Learn how to create a stylish and functional zippered bag while building essential sewing skills!  In this hands-on class, you will complete a fully lined bag with a zipper closure and quilted exterior.  Perfect for confident beginners and beyond!  You'll leave with not only a beautiful handmade bag but also the skills and confidence to make more on your own!  We will be using Sew Sweetness's amazing Persimmon Dumpling bag as a starting point, but will be adapting it to include bias edges and an optional pocket.  In this class we will cover:  Simple machine quilting, zipper installation, and beautifully finished edges with bias binding.

Zipper Bag (or H@cked Persimmon Dumpling Bag) -  Original pattern can be found at https://sewsweetness.com/products/persimmon-dumpling-pouch
NOTE:  Pattern and Medium template will be provided at class.  We will be deviating from the original pattern in the instructions, so please be mindful of the listed supplies.

Supplies
  • Sewing needles that work for your machine - I prefer microtex as they glide through the layers.
  • Coordinating Thread - I use a medium gray color
  • 28mm Rotary cutter - The smaller cutter is ideal for cutting out the pattern.
  • Pins or clips
  • Paper cutting scissors
  • 20” double zipper (you can use a single zipper if desired)
  • Foam Interfacing  - 12” x 17” (I prefer Bosal double sided fusible, but By Annie’s Soft & Stable will work well, but you will need to baste).
Fabrics:
  • Outer Fabric, tabs, slip pocket:  18”x22” (Note:  more may be needed for directional fabrics)
  • Lining Fabric:  12”x17” (Note: more may be needed for directional fabrics)
  • Bias Binding in coordinating fabric - 2.5” by approximately 50” Please have this prepared when coming to class.  You can make continuous bias binding from a coordinating fat quarter.  Contact Tammy if you need help!
Equipment
  • Sewing machine
  • Optional but helpful:  Iron and ironing mat.  If you have the travel all in one, that’s a great option! There are some at the shop, but having your own is a great option.
  • Optional:  1/2" D-Ring or 1/2" Swivel Hook
