Class Description:

Have you been intrigued with handquilting, but intimidated by the idea of a large project?  Now is your chance to tip your toes into the world of handquilting with this mini wholecloth quilt depicting two balloon dogs at play.  Join us as we learn the basics of handquilting including: basting a small quilt, rocking the needle, quilter’s knots, supplies, and tips for adding your own special touches.

Supplies List:
  • Hand drawn, prewashed, quilt top will be provided during class.
  • Betweens/Quilting needles - I prefer Foxglove size 9 or 10 Note:  if you wish to do big stitch quilting you will also need a chenille needle size 22 or 20.
  • Large Basting needles - these are typically 3-4” long and very sturdy
  • Quilting Thread - colors are your choice but I prefer a 50wt 100% cotton for standard quilting and an 8 or 12 weight perle cotton.
  • Basting threads - I use inexpensive threads, things that are leftovers from other projects, often coats and clark.
  • Scissors or thread snips
  • Thimble
  • 10” to 12” quilting hoop (NOT an embroidery/cross stitch hoop), quilting hoops are often wooden and can seem a bit flimsy.
  • Roll of masking or painter’s tape
  • Pattern weights (I use tiles or coasters, or an unopened tuna can in a pinch)
  • Optional but helpful:  thread conditioner or beeswax, needle threader, light and readers if used when binding quilts.
Fabric:
  • Backing - 28” x 22” (I recommend something that is lighter colored with an overall pattern) - Please PREWASH and Iron your backing fabric prior to class.
  • Batting - 28” x 22” (I recommend Hobbs Tuscany Wool, or a bamboo batting) Please note that cotton battings are easily obtained but most beginners find it challenging to needle.
  • Binding - ½ yard (not necessarily needed for class, but to finish your quilt…)

Equipment:
  • NO sewing machine needed, this is a hand sewing project.
